Allotment apple day

Writer: John.d.hancox@btinternet.comJohn.d.hancox@btinternet.com

Over the years I've supported loads of allotmenters and allotment associations to plant orchards so it was nice to be at the Kirklee allotment association open day yesterday in Glasgow... It was also such glorious weather.

Allotments tend by their nature to have a lot of red and flowers - but over time I have seen people planting much more fruit trees - apple, plum and pear - and also soft fruit bushes.

As space is often quite tight on allotments people tend to keep trees pruned tightly - and also trained forms such as stepover and cordons are a great idea for plots.
